Default A discussion upon the nature of the Soul - 06-12-2008, 06:49 AM

Genetics as a field of science is perhaps one of the single most controversial fields in the modern world today. The possibility of the destruction of mankind through a manufacture super-virus has become nearly cliche with it's use in various movies and games, while genetic alteration is ALREADY a cliche. No field holds greater potential than Genetics, and while this potential may be potential harm as well as potential benefits, it still maintains the potential.

One of the largest aspects of life has been called into question by the field of Genetics: Religion. Mainly, the differentiation of Man from Animal.

The two sides both maintain that they are completely correct, and while Genetics has concluded, in the natural manner of things, that Human beings are superior to animals in many ways, they have not admitted that anything along the lines of a soul exists.

First, a matter of importance for this debate: A question. Namely, what is a soul? For all intents and purposes of this discussion, a Soul is defined as either super-natural or natural trait of mankind that is exclusive to mankind. It is a separate entity from our conscious thought, and generally will include our morales within it. It can be corrupted. When you die, your Soul will pass to some form of an afterlife.

My personal opinion is that a Soul, taken as defined above, does not exist. But a soul, taken as a combination of creativity, higher levels of thinking, and logical reasoning, that, yes, that type of Soul exists within my beliefs.

A discussion about my beliefs would be dull and uninteresting. Please, post your opinions on the existence of a soul, or what you'd define a soul as.

I have never made but one prayer to God, a very short one: "O Lord make my enemies ridiculous." And God granted it.
