A novel adaption of the series has been written by Ishin Nishio, called Death Note: Another Note. It serves as a prequel to the manga series, with Mello narrating the story of L's first encounter with Naomi Misora during the Los Angeles "BB Serial Murder Case" mentioned in volume 2 of the manga. Beside Naomi's character, the novel focuses on how L works. Insight was given into Watari's orphanage and how the whole system of geniuses such as L, Mello and Near were put to work.
I bought this the other day, and I've got a little bit through (been busy with a surprise, soon to be announced on the forum ;D) But so far its very interesting. Just to pique your interest, I'll just type the intro from the inside of the cover:

Onto the scene comes L, the mysterious super-sleuth. Despite his peculiar working habits-he's never shown his face in public, for example-he's the most decorated detective in the world and has never tackled a case he hasn't been able to crack.
But this time he needs help.
Enlisting the services of an FBI agent named Naomi Misora, L starts snooping around the City of Angels. It soon becomes apparent that the killing spree is a psychotic riddle designed specifically to engage L in a battle of wits. Stuck in the middle between killer and investigator, it's up to Misora to navigate both the dead bodies and the egos to solve the Los Angeles BB Murder Cases.
I hear that this book is really good. Told from the perspective of Mello, it goes into the grizzly investigation of the BB murder cases. I hear they even develop the character of Matt further in this book, which is a welcome addition considering how late into the manga he turned up.
I'll be attempting to scanlate this at some point, so as soon as its ready for download you guys will be first to know!
For now, I'll leave you with the cover and the inside artwork. The cover looks slightly different in the english release, in that the white slip starts about a third of the way down and continues all the way to the bottom of the page,
Yeah, the cover is pretty and all, but wait till you see some of the artowrk. Now, with it being a novel, there's not a lot, but the few pictures that are in the book are amazingly well done. Take this for example:
Plus, you have the added novelty of each black page in the book, as well as the inside of the cover, having the colour and texture of the actual deathnote. Not exactly amazing, but still a nice touch.

I heard about this but I will not be reading it due to the fact that the end of the anime and manga series pissed me the hell off ><

This prequel has no mention of the events of the anime and manga series, at least to my knowledge. Even if Light were in it, his suckyness would ruin the book

I was really drawn into the story, then the book screwed me over with the plot twist at the end. The narrator even went so far as to praise the serial killer as being as good as, if not better than L.
F*CK YOU MELLO, F*CK YOU
This book is great and all, but that twist was SO unexpected.
